1980’s TV
remembered.
Programme i have
been watching recently – available through Amazon Prime – The Young Riders.
Late 80’s early 90’s
Western series based on the Pony Express – with some great portrayals. Young stars Stephen Baldwin and Josh Brolin
playing real life Pony Express Riders and Wild West legends Bill Cody and James
Hickok (Buffalo and Wild Bill) Great characters and great story lines. There is even a female rider (albeit pretending
to be a boy
Truths –
The have timelines
right – Teaspoon having been at the Alamo (25 anniversary) and being a Texas
Ranger tie into the time frame of the programme.
The Pony Express did favour employing orphan boys as riders,
there was, however, no known female rider.
Women did play a big role, as shown, in running the stations.
The looming civil
war and the factors causing friction, even among the friends, is again correct.
Both Buffalo Bill
and Wild Bill did ride for the Pony Express and were friends. Cody was would become a famous showman (his
love of books, writing, showmanship is often shown) and Hickok would become a famous
gunman (again shown in the series) some say the best of them all and one of the
few to have a recorded fast draw gunfight.
Wild Bill
Hickok had a famous quick-draw duel with Davis Tutt on July 21, 1865, in
Springfield, Missouri. Considered by many
historians as the first true, one-on-one "quick-draw" showdown in the
West, they faced off at about 75 yards in the town square over a gambling debt,
with Hickok killing Tutt in one shot.
